Main image

The Mogao Caves, near Dunhuang in Gansu province, are a complex of Buddhist cave temples carved into a cliff face on a Silk Road oasis and contain hundreds of painted caves and sculptures dating from the 4th to the 14th centuries. The site is renowned for its surviving wall paintings, sculptures and the early manuscript collection discovered in a sealed cave.

The complex includes decorative mural cycles, painted sculptures and architectural cave spaces arranged along the cliff; the early 20th-century discovery of the so-called Library Cave yielded a large archive of manuscripts and documents that significantly expanded knowledge of medieval Central Asian and Chinese history. Selected caves and museum displays are the focus of most visitor routes.

Carving and painting at Mogao occurred over many centuries under successive dynasties and diverse cultural influences from the Silk Road corridor. The site has been the focus of archaeological study and conservation efforts since the early 20th century and is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Mogao sits near the city of Dunhuang on the northwestern edge of the Hexi Corridor in Gansu province, adjacent to desert landscapes and accessible by road from Dunhuang.

  • Visitor management: Access is tightly managed for conservation; most visitor entry is by timed guided tours that cover selected caves and trace routes to the museum complex.

How to Get to Mogao Caves #

The Mogao Caves are outside Dunhuang in Gansu province. The caves are reached from Dunhuang city by tourist shuttle or taxi - the drive is approximately 25-30 km and typically takes about 30-40 minutes from the city centre. Dunhuang also has regular tourist buses and tour operators that run scheduled transfers to the Mogao Caves.

Tips for Visiting Mogao Caves #

  • Reserve timed-entry cave access well in advance-the Mogao Caves operate guided, time‑limited visits and the most important painted caves sell out days or weeks ahead, especially in high season.
  • Plan your visit around a specific small-group guided slot rather than wandering the site unplanned; the guided tours rotate through the key caves and booking a later afternoon slot can sometimes be less crowded than peak morning tours.
  • Allow extra time to visit the nearby Dunhuang museum and the Conservatory Exhibition (where reproductions and context are displayed); many visitors who only see the caves miss these complementary displays that explain the art and routes.

Best Time to Visit Mogao Caves #

Best in spring or autumn and, for a better experience, visit on weekday mornings to avoid peak holiday crowds; the caves are indoor and climate-controlled, so crowding is the main concern.

Spring (best shoulder)
Mar-May · 10-25°C
Pleasant temperatures and clearer desert air make visits comfortable; avoid windy days, which are more common in spring.
Summer (hot)
Jun-Aug · 25-38°C
Very hot in the desert region - caves are cool inside but outdoor transfer and walking can be uncomfortable; visitor numbers rise in summer holidays.
Autumn (ideal)
Sep-Nov · 15-30°C
Generally the most comfortable weather for seeing the murals and exploring the site with fewer dust and heat issues than summer.
