How to Get to Jiayuguan City
Jiayuguan is reachable by its regional Jiayuguan Airport (JGN) and by rail via Jiayuguan West railway station on the Lanzhou-Xinjiang corridor. For most visitors the fastest and most convenient option is to arrive by air into Lanzhou or by high‑speed train directly to Jiayuguan West, then use local taxis or buses for the last mile.
Jiayuguan Airport (JGN): Jiayuguan has a small regional airport with flights to Lanzhou and a few other regional hubs. From the airport to Jiayuguan city centre you can take the airport shuttle or hotel transfer (shuttle about CNY 10-20, 20-30 minutes) or a taxi (around CNY 30-50, 15-25 minutes).
Lanzhou Zhongchuan Airport (LHW): Lanzhou is the major international/regional gateway for Gansu. From Zhongchuan Airport take the airport coach or shuttle into Lanzhou city (CNY 25-40, 40-60 minutes) and then a high-speed or conventional train to Jiayuguan (see train card); a taxi directly to Jiayuguan is possible but long and expensive (several hundred CNY; travel time ~4-5 hours by road).
Train: Jiayuguan West Railway Station (Jiayuguanxi) handles high-speed services on the Lanzhou-Xinjiang corridor; there is also the older Jiayuguan station on the conventional Lanzhou-Xinjiang line. High-speed trains from Lanzhou and intermediate cities are the fastest option (typical travel time from Lanzhou to Jiayuguan ~3-4 hours; second-class tickets commonly in the CNY 140-220 range). Conventional trains are slower and cheaper (long overnight options, CNY ~80-150).
Bus: Long-distance coaches connect Jiayuguan with nearby cities (Lanzhou, Zhangye, Dunhuang) from the main long-distance bus station; travel times and fares vary by route (e.g., several hours, fares commonly CNY 50-200 depending on distance). Within the city, local buses are very cheap (typically CNY 1-2) and cover most neighborhoods; taxis and DiDi are widely available for door-to-door travel (see transport section).
How to Get Around Jiayuguan City
Jiayuguan is easiest to navigate by rail for intercity travel and by taxi/DiDi for local flexibility; buses are the cheapest option if you're on a strict budget. For short distances and sightseeing in the central area, walking or renting an e‑bike works well.
- High‑speed rail (G/C trains) (CNY 140-220) - High‑speed trains to Jiayuguan West are the best mix of speed and comfort for intercity travel in Gansu. Trains connect Lanzhou and other regional hubs with frequent daytime services; book in advance during holidays. Expect reserved seats, luggage space, and station facilities - arrives at Jiayuguan West which is a short taxi ride from main attractions.
- Conventional rail (Z trains, T trains) (CNY 80-150) - Overnight and conventional trains serve the older Jiayuguan station and are cheaper but much slower than high‑speed services. These are useful for budget travellers or night travel; expect fewer amenities and longer journey times compared with G/C trains.
- Long‑distance bus (CNY 50-200) - Intercity coaches link Jiayuguan with Lanzhou, Zhangye and Dunhuang from the central coach station. Coaches can be cheaper than trains for some routes but are subject to road conditions and longer travel times. Buy tickets at the station or through local agencies; bring water and expect occasional stops.
- Taxi & DiDi (CNY 8-10 (flag fall), CNY 2-3 per km; short trips CNY 10-40) - Taxis and the DiDi app are the most convenient way to move around town and to reach the city gates or the Great Wall sites. Short trips in the city are inexpensive but always check the meter or confirm the DiDi fare; night surcharges may apply. Drivers can also do airport or station transfers at an agreed price.
- Local bus (CNY 1-2) - Jiayuguan's city buses are extremely cheap and cover most residential and commercial areas. Services are frequent on main routes but can be sparse in suburbs and tourist sites, so check schedules. Buses are a good budget option for short to medium distances.
- Bicycle / E‑bike rental (CNY 10-40 per day) - Bicycle and electric‑bike rentals are common for short trips and sight‑seeing around the city; they're a flexible, low‑cost way to explore flat areas near the centre. Helmets and basic traffic awareness are recommended - watch for local traffic patterns and park responsibly.
- Walking - Many of Jiayuguan's main sights in the city centre and the nearby fortress are walkable if you're staying centrally. Walking is the best way to absorb local streets and markets, but for longer excursions (Great Wall outposts, mines) arrange transport.
