Mkomazi National Park is a protected area in northeastern Tanzania that conserves semi-arid savanna, thorn scrub and mountain foothill habitats. The park is an important site for species reintroduction and conservation projects focused on endangered large mammals.

Visitors go for remote wildlife viewing, conservation-focused visits and to see landscapes of Acacia dry bush, seasonal rivers and scattered hills. The park is less visited than Tanzania’s major safari parks and is managed with a strong emphasis on habitat restoration and species recovery.

The area was originally designated as a game reserve in the 20th century and was upgraded to national park status in 2006. International conservation partners have been involved in reintroducing and protecting species such as black rhinoceros and African wild dog.

Mkomazi lies in north-eastern Tanzania in a semi-arid zone inland from the Indian Ocean, encompassing plains and low mountains managed for wildlife conservation.

  • Protected status: Originally designated as a game reserve in the mid-20th century, it was upgraded to national park status in 2006 to strengthen conservation efforts.
  • Conservation focus: The park is known for semi-arid savanna, Acacia woodlands and targeted reintroduction and protection programmes for endangered species such as black rhinoceros and African wild dog.
