Miran (Xinjiang)

Miran is an archaeological ruin site on the southern edge of the Taklamakan Desert in Xinjiang, China, containing the remains of a Silk Road outpost with religious and military features dating from the early first millennium through the medieval period.

The site shows foundation outlines, ruined walls, stupa bases and the footprints of a monastery complex, providing visible evidence of an inland Silk Road station. Fragments of Buddhist architecture and sculptural work are among the surviving features.

Miran was an active stop on the southern caravan routes of the Silk Road and was occupied in multiple phases over many centuries. The site was visited and excavated by early 20th-century explorers, including Sir Aurel Stein, who documented and removed finds for study.

Located on the southern margin of the Taklamakan Desert in Xinjiang, Miran lies inland from the modern regional centers and is accessed via long road journeys from nearby county towns.
