Minneriya National Park is a protected area in central Sri Lanka focused on dry-zone forest and the Minneriya reservoir, commonly known as the Minneriya Tank. The park is internationally noted for its wildlife, especially Asian elephants.

The reservoir functions as a magnet for wildlife during the dry season and can draw large aggregations of elephants and other mammals and birds; groups of elephants numbering in the hundreds are recorded during peak months. Visitors come largely to view wildlife from designated observation points and on guided safaris.

The park was designated to conserve the dry-zone ecosystem and the species that depend on the tank as a water source; management centres on habitat protection and regulated visitor access. It is one of several protected areas in Sri Lanka that support sizable elephant populations.

Minneriya sits in the North Central region of Sri Lanka near historical and tourist towns such as Habarana and Polonnaruwa, and is accessed by road from those centres.

  • Best time to visit: Dry-season months, especially August and September, are the best time to see large congregations of Asian elephants at the reservoir.

Tips for Visiting Minneriya National Park #

  • Plan a late-afternoon safari (4pm-6pm) for The Gathering of elephants - better light and more chance of seeing large herds.
  • Hire a certified local safari driver who knows Minneriya's seasonal waterholes; park headquarters in Minneriya village can recommend guides.
  • Bring a camera with a telephoto lens (200-400mm); roads are dusty and vehicles venturing off-track can damage habitat.
