The remote village of Mimong is at the center of the Cambodian gold rush. Located in what is often referred to as the ‘wild east’, this once small village has mushroomed with the arrival of gold-seekers.
The gold mines at Mimong have made the district of the same name famous across Cambodia. The mining equipment here is outdated and poorly maintained, making trips to the Mondulkiri Province mines dangerous. Expect to see miners descending into the pits via ancient mine carts linked by rusty winches.
Attractions in and around Mimong include Tan Lung Waterfall, impressive but notoriously difficult to reach, and the Mimong gold mines.
