Mountain Ancient Buddhist monastery and pilgrimage complex in Sri Lanka
Ancient Buddhist pilgrimage site near Anuradhapura where tradition marks the introduction of Buddhism to Sri Lanka; stone stairways, stupas and monastery ruins draw pilgrims and history‑minded visitors.
Mihintale is a religious site and monastic complex in north-central Sri Lanka traditionally associated with the introduction of Buddhism to the island in the 3rd century BCE. It occupies a steep limestone ridge and contains stupas, monastery buildings, stone stairways and shrine sites.
Key features include temple platforms, dagabas (stupas), ancient rock-cut steps and the spot traditionally identified as the meeting place between the Buddhist missionary Mahinda and King Devanampiyatissa. The complex remains an active pilgrimage destination and is visited year-round by both pilgrims and tourists.
Archaeological remains at Mihintale reflect centuries of monastic development and include masonry structures and carved stone elements that date from early historic times through the medieval period. The site has been studied and conserved by Sri Lankan heritage authorities.
Mihintale sits on a ridge about a short drive east of the ancient city of Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province, set within the dry lowland landscape that surrounds the ancient capital.
- Pilgrimage timing: The site is a major pilgrimage destination during Poson Poya and other Buddhist festivals, when large numbers of pilgrims climb the stairways to the summit.
- Access and terrain: The complex is reached from the city of Anuradhapura by a short drive; the site sits on a prominent rock outcrop with many exposed ancient stone steps and terraces.
What to See #
- Kantaka Cetiya: Kantaka Cetiya - a stupa complex constructed on the Mihintale ridge, visible from the main stairway and regarded as one of the prominent religious monuments on the site.
- Aradhana Gala: Aradhana Gala - the rock outcrop traditionally identified as the meeting place where the Buddhist missionary Mahinda addressed King Devanampiyatissa. It is a focal point for pilgrims.
- Monastic complex: Monastic ruins and stairways - extensive remains of monastic cells, dagabas (stupas) and paved stairways leading to the summit that form the complex's principal archaeological fabric.
How to Get to Mihintale #
From Anuradhapura town centre take a tuk‑tuk (20-30 minutes) or a local bus heading east toward Mihintale (buses run regularly). The site begins at the base of the hill; the main staircase climbs up roughly 150-200 metres from the parking/entrance area to the higher monuments.
Tips for Visiting Mihintale #

- Bring mosquito repellent and a hat - the summit has little shade.
- Don't skip the cliff-side path to the Kantaka Cetiya and the replica of Mahinda's bowl; the panels explaining the 3rd-century BCE arrival of Buddhism are succinct and worth reading.
