Middleham Castle is a ruined medieval castle in the town of Middleham in Wensleydale, North Yorkshire, England, with origins in the 12th century and later major rebuilding in the later medieval period. It is historically significant for its association with the powerful Neville family and with Richard, Duke of Gloucester.
Remains include a substantial stone keep, curtain walls and an inner bailey; visitors can view the layout of the medieval fortress and the masonry phases that reflect Norman and later adaptations. Interpretive signs explain the castle’s plan and important episodes in its use.
The castle was founded in the 12th century and underwent significant enlargement and remodeling by the Nevilles in the 14th and 15th centuries; it served as a noble residence and administrative centre as well as a defensive structure. It fell into ruin in the post-medieval period but has remained a visible historic ruin.
