Barnard Castle is a ruined medieval fortress in the market town of Barnard Castle, County Durham, England, founded in the 12th century and situated on a pronounced loop above the River Tees.

Surviving features include an imposing stone keep and stretches of curtain wall; visitors commonly explore the ramparts and terraces for views over the river and town. The compact ruin is readably laid out and easy to explore on foot.

The site was founded in the 12th century by the Balliol family and later came into the hands of the Bishops of Durham; it was expanded and refortified in the medieval period and declined into ruin in later centuries.

The castle stands in the centre of the town of Barnard Castle, immediately above the River Tees in County Durham, within easy walking distance of the town centre and its amenities.

Barnard Castle town is reachable by road from Durham or Teesside; the nearest train station with regular service is Darlington, then a bus or taxi (approx. 30-45 minutes). The ruins are a short walk from the town centre.

• Walk the riverside first to see the castle from below - the view from the riverbank captures the structure's dramatic cliffside position.
• Visit the Bowes Museum in nearby Barnard Castle town for complementary local history displays.
• Beware uneven ground on the curtain-walk and steep steps; the site is partly ruined and not fully accessible.
