M'Goun
Mountain Majestic High Atlas massif and popular trekking destination
The Jebel Mgoun massif in Morocco’s High Atlas offers multi‑day trekking routes, high passes and Berber villages; hikers tackle its trails and river gorges.
M’Goun is a mountain massif in the Central High Atlas of Morocco, in the Drâa-Tafilalet region. Its highest summit reaches about 4,071 metres, and the area is known for large plateaus and deep valleys.
The massif is a destination for multi-day trekking routes that cross high plateaus and river valleys; typical routes include ridge walks and round-trip treks of several days. Trekkers encounter rocky passes, seasonal streams and remote Berber villages rather than developed facilities.
The modern human use of the massif is primarily pastoral and for trekking; local communities have long used the high plateaus for summer grazing. Over time routes and mountain huts have developed to support tourism while traditional village life continues in adjacent valleys.
Geographically the massif lies in central Morocco within the High Atlas mountain chain. It sits inland from the Atlantic coast, northeast of the city of Ouarzazate and east of Marrakech, surrounded by highland plateaus and river valleys.
- When to go: Best trekking season runs from late spring to early autumn when high-altitude passes are free of snow and most mountain refuges are open.
- Summit height: The summit reaches about 4,071 metres, making it one of the higher peaks of the High Atlas range.
