Janitzio

Janitzio is the largest island in Lake Pátzcuaro in the state of Michoacán, Mexico, known for its steep shoreline, lakeside village, and a prominent summit monument. The island is a local cultural focal point within Lake Pátzcuaro.

A dominant feature is a tall stone monument to José María Morelos at the island’s summit, which visitors can ascend for wide views across the lake and to the surrounding towns. The island village has narrow streets and local vendors; boat crossings from Pátzcuaro take only minutes.

Janitzio grew as a lakeside fishing and market community and has long been associated with Purépecha culture and local festivals. The summit monument was erected in the 20th century and has become the island’s most recognizable landmark.

The island sits in the central area of Lake Pátzcuaro, within easy boat distance of the town of Pátzcuaro on the lake’s northern shore. The island is accessible only by small passenger boats operated from lakeside ports.
