Mesa Verde National Park
Park Ancestral Pueblo cliff dwellings and archaeological national park
Cliff Palace and other Ancestral Puebloan cliff dwellings dominate Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado. Tourists visit for guided tours, archaeological sites, mesa-top overlooks and well-preserved masonry dating from the 12th and 13th centuries.
Mesa Verde National Park in southwestern Colorado protects thousands of archaeological sites, including hundreds of well-preserved Ancestral Puebloan cliff dwellings. The park is one of the United States’ earliest national parks, set aside to conserve this extensive cultural landscape.
The park’s highlights are the cliff dwellings built into alcoves-including the large Cliff Palace-and numerous mesa-top archaeological sites accessible by road and trail. Interpretive exhibits, guided tours and museum displays provide context for the buildings and the people who constructed them.
Ancestral Puebloan communities built and occupied the cliff dwellings and mesa-top sites from approximately 600 to 1300 CE. Mesa Verde was established as a national park in 1906 and later inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site to recognise its outstanding archaeological and cultural significance.
Located in Montezuma County in southwestern Colorado, the park sits near the town of Cortez and serves as a regional destination for archaeological tourism in the Four Corners area.

How to Get to Mesa Verde National Park #
Mesa Verde National Park is served by road from the nearby town of Cortez, Colorado, which is the usual gateway for visitors. The park is accessed by vehicle only and there is parking at the visitor center and cliff‑dwelling viewpoints.
Tips for Visiting Mesa Verde National Park #
- Book guided cliff-dwelling tours (Cliff Palace, Balcony House, etc.) in advance and choose an early time slot - tours have limited capacity and are the only way to enter some dwellings.
- Start at the Chapin Mesa Visitor Center to pick up maps and current ranger-talk schedules, then do the Mesa Top Loop and overlooks earlier in the day to avoid tour-bus crowds later on.
- If you want quieter archaeology experiences, include lesser-visited sites and overlooks rather than staying only at the most famous cliff dwellings, which attract the largest crowds and busiest photo times.
Best Time to Visit Mesa Verde National Park #
Visit late spring through early fall for reliable access to cliff‑dwelling tours and park roads; summer offers the warmest, most consistently open conditions.
