Mendes
Archaeological Site Ancient Nile Delta city, historic Egyptian cult center.
Mendes (ancient Djedet) sits in Egypt’s Nile Delta and remains an archaeological site associated with the ram-god Banebdjedet; visitors interested in ancient Egypt come for ruins and local museum finds.
Mendes (ancient Djedet) is an archaeological site in the Nile Delta of Egypt, within the modern Dakahlia Governorate. In antiquity it was a regional capital and cult centre in Lower Egypt.
The site produced remains from Pharaonic through Greco-Roman periods, including temples and necropoleis, and was associated with the ram deity often called Banebdjedet. Archaeological work has recovered pottery, architectural fragments and other material evidence of long occupation.
Over time the importance of Mendes rose and fell with shifting political and environmental conditions in the delta; many ancient remains now lie under agricultural land or have been reused in later periods.
Mendes sits in the eastern Nile Delta, some tens of kilometres north of Cairo and close to modern agricultural communities in Dakahlia, accessible by road from nearby towns and regional centers.
- Ancient identity: Historically known as Djedet in Egyptian sources, the city was associated with a ram cult and served as the capital of a Lower Egyptian nome in antiquity.
