Menara Gardens

Menara Gardens are a historic 12th-century orchard and garden complex on the western edge of Marrakech, Morocco, centred on a large rectangular water basin and a palm-fringed olive grove. The site is a recognized historic garden dating back to the Almohad period and later restorations.

The main visitor attractions are the long reflecting pool and the pavilion that faces it, together with shaded paths through the olive groves. The layout was designed for irrigation and leisure and combines functional agricultural plots with formal garden features.

The gardens were established in the medieval period and have been maintained, altered and re-planted across centuries; the 12th-century foundation under the Almohads is the origin of the site and later rulers added structures and plantings. The setting has long been associated with water management and pastoral uses outside the city walls.

The Menara Gardens lie west of Marrakech’s historic medina and city ramparts, within the Marrakesh-Safi region, and are easily reached from the city centre.

• Atlas views: The garden offers clear views of the High Atlas Mountains on days with good visibility, making late afternoon a popular time for photographs.

• Pavilion and reflecting pool: A central pavilion built beside a large rectangular reflecting basin that dates from later renovations and provides a focal point for views across the water.
• Olive groves and terraces: Extensive olive groves and planted terraces that occupy much of the garden area and contribute to its historic agricultural character and shaded walks.
