Melka Kunture is a major Paleolithic archaeological complex in Ethiopia’s Oromia region, known for long sequences of stone-tool assemblages and hominin occupation.
The site comprises multiple excavation localities with stratified deposits containing Oldowan and Acheulean stone tools and later Middle Stone Age assemblages. Archaeological trenches and open-air sites yield stone tools, flakes and associated archaeological data rather than monumental architecture.
Systematic fieldwork at Melka Kunture began in the mid-20th century and has documented human technological change across more than a million years, producing some of the key records for early human behavior in East Africa. The site has informed study of Acheulean handaxe industries and other early stone-tool traditions.
Melka Kunture lies in the upper Awash River area of Oromia Regional State in Ethiopia, on the volcanic plateau region south of Addis Ababa.
