Melissani Cave
Amusement Park Karst cave with underground lake and boat tours
A collapsed cave-lake on Kefalonia, Melissani Cave offers guided boat trips across turquoise water and shafts of sunlight; visitors come for the unusual geology and photography.
Melissani Cave is an open-roof sea cave with an inland lake on the island of Kefalonia in Greece, notable for its bright turquoise water and inward-facing chamber. The cave chamber is accessed by small boats that carry visitors across the lake and allow close viewing of the rock formations and reflected light.
The principal feature is a circular lake within a vaulted cavern where daylight enters through openings in the roof, creating strong color contrasts in the water surface. Guided boat trips traverse the lake and are the primary way to experience the interior.
The cave formed through karst processes and roof collapse; its present appearance emphasizes the interaction of light, water and limestone surfaces. The site is managed for tourism and typically operates with seasonal opening hours.
Melissani sits on the eastern side of Kefalonia near the village of Sami, accessible by road from the island’s main centres.
- Best time for photography: Best light conditions occur around midday when the sun is highest and rays enter through the roof opening, producing vibrant turquoise reflections on the lake.
- Location and access: Located on the island of Kefalonia near the village of Sami; access is by road to the site and then a short walk to the cave entrance where small boat trips operate.
What to See #
- Lake chamber: The circular underground lake chamber formed by a collapsed cave roof, with a central pool of water that reflects light from the cave opening.
- Landing and boat pier: The shoreline landing area where small boats load and unload visitors for guided boat trips across the lake and observation of the cave interior.
How to Get to Melissani Cave #
Melissani Cave is on the east side of Kefalonia near the town of Sami. From Argostoli (the island capital) drive east across the island on the main road toward Sami - the trip is roughly 35-40 km and takes about an hour by car. KTEL Kefalonias runs seasonal buses between Argostoli and Sami; from the Sami bus stop you can take a short taxi ride or walk roughly 3 km (30-45 minutes) along the local road to the Melissani car park. From the car park the cave entrance and ticket office are a short paved walk of a few hundred metres.
Tips for Visiting Melissani Cave #
- Aim to visit Melissani between about 11:30 and 14:30 when the sun is highest-this produces the strongest skylight beam and the cave's famous aquamarine color for photography.
- If you want to avoid the longest boat queues, arrive right at opening or late afternoon; boats operate on a first-come, first-served basis at the small dock inside the cave.
- Combine Melissani with a short drive to nearby Drogarati Cave on the same day-many visitors miss this complementary cave experience, which makes the trip to northern Kefalonia more rewarding.
Best Time to Visit Melissani Cave #
Best visited late spring through early autumn (April-October) for the clearest water and easiest access, with peak light and crowds in mid‑summer.
