Meir is an ancient funerary site on the west bank of the Nile in Middle Egypt, associated with the provincial elites of the Middle Kingdom. The site is best known for its rock-cut tombs of local governors and officials, which preserve painted reliefs and scenes of daily life.
Visitors can see decorated chambers carved into the limestone cliffs with scenes of agriculture, hunting, boat traffic and offering rituals; these tombs date mainly to the 11th and 12th Dynasties. The necropolis served as the burial ground for regional administrators and their households during the Middle Kingdom period.
Meir lies in Middle Egypt near the modern city of Asyut and the town of Mallawi, on the west bank of the Nile.
