Medinet Habu
Archaeological Site New Kingdom mortuary temple complex of Ramses III
Medinet Habu on Luxor’s west bank is Ramesses III’s mortuary temple complex with extensive reliefs and fortified walls; tourists combine visits with nearby Valley of the Kings and other west-bank sites.
Medinet Habu is the large mortuary temple complex of Pharaoh Ramesses III on the west bank of the Nile at Thebes (modern Luxor). The temple dates to the 12th century BCE and is notable for its extensive wall reliefs and inscriptions documenting royal rituals and military campaigns.
The site includes monumental pylons, courtyards, hypostyle halls and sanctuaries richly decorated with reliefs that are among the clearest examples of New Kingdom monumental art. Visitors often study the narrative battle scenes and ritual depictions carved on the temple walls.
Constructed under Ramesses III in the early 12th century BCE as a funerary cult center, the complex remained visible and was intermittently reused in later Pharaonic and Coptic periods. Its good state of preservation results from later reuse and relative protection from Nile floods.
Medinet Habu sits on the west bank of Luxor within the Theban necropolis, close to other major sites such as the Valley of the Kings and Deir el-Medina; it is part of standard archaeological circuits in Luxor.
- Reliefs and scenes: Contains some of the best-preserved New Kingdom mortuary temple reliefs, including detailed scenes of Ramesses III's battles and rituals.
- Location in the Theban necropolis: Frequently visited on West Bank tours of Luxor and is physically adjacent to other Theban mortuary sites, so it is often combined with nearby tombs and temples.
What to See #
- Forecourt and pylons: Outer forecourt and processional way leading to the main pylons and courtyards with well-preserved wall reliefs depicting royal ceremonies and military campaigns.
- Hypostyle halls and sanctuaries: Hypostyle halls and inner sanctuaries containing reliefs and inscriptions associated with Ramesses III and subsequent reuse in later periods.
How to Get to Medinet Habu #
Medinet Habu is on Luxor’s West Bank among the major West Bank temples. From Luxor city (East Bank) take a short Nile ferry or taxi across to the West Bank, then a taxi or local minibus to the temple complex; it lies within the main archaeological zone near the Valley of the Kings and other West Bank sites.
Tips for Visiting Medinet Habu #
- Go at opening time on the West Bank to avoid midday heat and the bulk of cruise-ship or packaged tour groups that arrive later in the morning.
- Use the main entrance off the West Bank road and pick up a site map-Medinet Habu's large open courtyards and well-preserved reliefs reward slow, linear exploring rather than a quick pass.
- Spend extra time inside the inner chapels and alongside the southern wall where finely carved scenes and the temple's defensive features are less noticed by people who rush between major West Bank monuments.
