McNary National Wildlife Refuge is a protected wetland complex along the Columbia River in southeastern Washington that provides habitat for migrating waterfowl and other water-dependent wildlife. It lies adjacent to the river corridor formed by the McNary Dam area and is managed for wildlife conservation and public wildlife observation.

The refuge contains extensive riverine wetlands, back channels, and riparian habitat that concentrate waterfowl, shorebirds, and other species during migration and winter months. Numerous roadside viewing points and small parking areas allow short walks to wetlands and river overlooks. Boat access from nearby ramp facilities on the Columbia River gives additional viewing opportunities along the refuge shoreline.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service manages the area as part of the National Wildlife Refuge System; the refuge was created in the mid-20th century to protect important migratory-bird habitat along the Pacific Flyway. Management has focused on wetland restoration, floodplain habitat maintenance, and providing seasonal cover and forage for migratory birds.

The refuge is located on the Washington side of the Columbia River near the Oregon border, opposite the McNary Dam and the towns along the river. It sits within the broader Tri-Cities and Umatilla area of the Columbia Basin and is accessed from local county roads off the main highway corridors.

  • Best time to visit: Best wildlife viewing occurs during fall and winter migrations when waterfowl concentrations are highest; bring binoculars and warm clothing.
  • Access and seasonal closures: Public access is via riverfront roads and small parking areas; some parts of the refuge are seasonally flooded or closed for nesting so check local management notices before planning a route.
