How to Get to Mazatenango

Mazatenango is reached mainly by road; the nearest major international airport is La Aurora (GUA) in Guatemala City and the closest regional airport is Retalhuleu (RER). There are no passenger trains - most visitors arrive at GUA and continue by intercity bus, shuttle, taxi or rental car to Mazatenango.

By Air

La Aurora International Airport (GUA): La Aurora in Guatemala City is the main international gateway for Mazatenango. From the airport you can hire a rental car (driving time ~2.5-3.5 hours depending on traffic) or take a taxi/private transfer directly to Mazatenango; expect a private taxi or transfer to cost roughly US$90-$140 one way and take about 3-3.5 hours. Many travelers fly into GUA then catch an intercity bus or shared shuttle from Guatemala City’s bus terminals (see Bus below) - allow extra time (30-60 minutes) to get from the airport into the city proper.

Retalhuleu Airport (RER): Retalhuleu (RER) is the nearest regional airport serving the Pacific coast and occasionally has regional flights. Ground transfers from RER to Mazatenango are short (about 45-75 minutes) by taxi or shuttle; a taxi or private transfer is typically under US$30-$40 (roughly Q200-Q300) depending on negotiation and number of passengers. Flight schedules into RER are limited, so check service availability before planning to arrive here.

By Train & Bus

Train: Guatemala does not have regular passenger rail services; freight lines exist but no practical train option to Mazatenango. Plan to use road transport for all intercity travel.

Bus: Intercity coaches and local “chicken buses” serve Mazatenango from Guatemala City and other towns. Buses to Mazatenango depart from Guatemala City’s western bus terminals (commonly referred to as the Terminal de Occidente/Occidental bus terminal) and from regional terminals near Retalhuleu; the trip from Guatemala City typically takes about 3-4 hours. Fares vary by service: expect informal chicken-bus fares on the low end (around Q20-Q50 / US$3-$6) and upgraded coach or shuttle services in the Q60-Q150 range (US$8-$20+) depending on comfort and whether the service is private or shared.

How to Get Around Mazatenango

Mazatenango is best navigated by road: buses and shared shuttles connect it to Guatemala City and nearby towns, while local taxis and motor-taxis handle short hops inside town. Walking covers the compact center well; rent a car only if you plan to explore the wider department or coastal areas.
