Matsumoto Castle
Museum Feudal-era black castle with original interior keep
Matsumoto Castle in Nagano prefecture presents one of Japan’s original castles with a black exterior (the ‘Crow Castle’), a moat and clear views of the surrounding Alps on good days.
Matsumoto Castle is a historic castle in Nagano Prefecture known for its black-painted main keep and original feudal-era structures. It is regarded as one of Japan’s premier preserved castles and is designated a National Treasure.
The fortified complex centres on a multi-storey wooden keep with a distinctive black exterior, set within moats and stone foundations and accompanied by smaller turrets and gates. The main keep presents five visible stories and six internal levels, reflecting defensive and residential design from the late 16th century.
Construction of the core castle dates to the late 16th century during the Sengoku and early Edo periods; much of the existing keep survives from that era, though other structures have been repaired or reconstructed over time. The site has been preserved and opened to the public as a museum and cultural property.
Matsumoto Castle sits in the centre of Matsumoto City, approximately 30 km west of Nagano city and about 3 hours by train from Tokyo on typical routes; the castle grounds border an urban park and are easily reached from Matsumoto Station.
- Visitor facilities: The keep interior contains exhibition spaces explaining the castle's architecture and history; photography is permitted in most exterior areas but may be restricted inside.
- Nickname and photo tip: Matsumoto Castle is often called 'Crow Castle' for its dark exterior; it is especially photogenic at sunrise and during cherry blossom season when grounds are illuminated.
What to See #
- Main Keep (Tenshu): The main castle keep is a black-painted wooden tenshu showing five visible stories and six internal levels, and is one of Japan's few surviving original keeps from the feudal era.
- Moats and gates: Stone foundations, moats and reconstructed gates and turrets surround the keep; the castle sits within a rectangular moat system that enhances its visual profile.

Tips for Visiting Matsumoto Castle #
- Go at opening on a weekday to photograph the castle reflected in the moat with far fewer people and to enjoy a calm climb through the interior before guided tours arrive.
- Approach from Nawate-dori and Nakamachi Street to combine the castle visit with well-preserved merchant streets and local shops that many visitors overlook.
- If you want classic photos, position yourself at the east side of the moat for the best unobstructed reflection of the castle tower in the morning light.
