Mather Point is a principal viewpoint on the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona, named for Stephen T. Mather, the first director of the U.S. National Park Service.
The site offers wide panoramic views across the inner gorge of the Grand Canyon and down toward the Colorado River in places, making it one of the park’s most visited overlooks. Photographers and sightseers commonly gather here at sunrise and sunset for the dramatic light and shadow across the canyon walls.
The overlook is immediately adjacent to the Grand Canyon Visitor Center and is served by the park shuttle system; the primary viewing area is on paved, accessible pathways with safety railings.
Mather Point sits on the South Rim within Grand Canyon National Park in northern Arizona, near Grand Canyon Village.

How to Get to Mather Point #
Mather Point is reached from Grand Canyon Village on Arizona State Route 64. The Grand Canyon Visitor Center is a short walk from the South Rim shuttle bus stops; parking is available at the visitor center but fills early in the high season. The South Rim is about a 4-5 hour drive from Phoenix, or 1.5 hours from Flagstaff.
Tips for Visiting Mather Point #
- Arrive at sunrise or just after for the light that gives depth to the canyon's walls and for smaller crowds.
- Walk the short path from the Grand Canyon Visitor Center rather than parking at the visitor center lots - both are close but the visitor center lot fills early in high season.
- Bring layered clothing: temperatures on the rim can swing wildly, especially in spring and fall.
