Grand Canyon National Park
Park Vast Colorado River canyon and eroded desert landscape
The Grand Canyon cuts across northern Arizona with layered rock strata visible from rim viewpoints; visitors hike trails, ride mules, raft the Colorado River and study geology at visitor centres on both rims.
Grand Canyon National Park protects a major stretch of the Colorado River canyon in northern Arizona and showcases dramatic layered rock exposures carved over millions of years. The canyon is roughly 277 miles (446 kilometers) long with widths up to about 18 miles and depths in excess of one mile.
Visitors mainly experience the canyon from the South Rim and North Rim viewpoints, scenic drives and hiking trails. Key activities include rim viewing, day and multi-day hikes such as trails that descend toward the river, and river rafting on the Colorado River.
The canyon has been home to Indigenous peoples for millennia and was designated a U.S. National Park in 1919. Ongoing scientific study and park management focus on geology, ecology and cultural sites.
The park is in northern Arizona, with the South Rim reachable by road from cities such as Flagstaff (about 80 miles or 130 kilometers to the southeast); access and services differ between the South and North rims.
- Scale: The canyon stretches about 277 miles (446 kilometers), reaches widths up to 18 miles (29 kilometers) and has depths exceeding one mile (about 1,857 meters) in places.
- Safety and planning: Rim-to-river hikes and river trips are strenuous and require careful planning, permits for overnight backcountry use, and awareness of extreme heat in summer.
What to See #
- South Rim: The South Rim contains the main visitor facilities, Grand Canyon Village, and popular viewpoints such as Mather Point and Yavapai Point; it is accessible year-round and receives most visitors.
- North Rim: The North Rim sits at higher elevation with cooler temperatures and limited services; it is typically open seasonally from mid-May to mid-October and is less crowded.
- Colorado River: The Colorado River runs along the canyon floor and is the focus of multi-day rafting trips and backcountry river expeditions through the canyon.
How to Get to Grand Canyon National Park #
Grand Canyon National Park (South Rim) is typically reached by road via Arizona State Route 64; from Flagstaff the drive is about 130 km (roughly 1.5-2 hours), and from Phoenix it is roughly 360-370 km (about 3.5-4.5 hours) depending on route and traffic. Within the park, Grand Canyon Village and trailheads are served by park shuttle buses (no private vehicle access on some scenic roads during peak season), and most overlooks are a short walk from shuttle stops or parking areas. The North Rim is more remote and requires a longer drive.
Tips for Visiting Grand Canyon National Park #
- On the South Rim, go to a major viewpoint (Mather Point, Yavapai) at sunrise and use the park shuttle (Hermit Road shuttle in season) to avoid private-vehicle congestion and midday crowds.
- If you want fewer people and a different experience, consider the North Rim (seasonal, smaller capacity) or visit Desert View later in the day - both are significantly less crowded than the South Rim village areas.
- Plan any down-rim hikes carefully: overnight backcountry trips require a permit from park backcountry offices and fill up in advance; for day-hiking, start very early to avoid heat and to pass slower hikers on narrow trails.
Best Time to Visit Grand Canyon National Park #
Spring and autumn are often the best times to visit for good weather and manageable crowds; summer is hottest and busiest.
