Nantucket Travel Guide
City Island town off Massachusetts coast, historic whaling port
Sea smoke and cobbles herald Nantucket’s whaling past: lighthouses, the Whaling Museum and compact harbor dining. Visitors bike the Atlantic-facing beaches, book boat trips to Great Point and sample island scallops at low-lit supper rooms.
Why Visit Nantucket? #
Nantucket draws visitors for its preserved whaling-era charm, sandy beaches, and maritime culture rather than nightlife or big attractions. The Whaling Museum and Brant Point Lighthouse speak to the island’s seafaring past, while Siasconset’s rose-lined lanes and coastal bluffs offer quieter coastal walks. Local seafood-Nantucket scallops and chowder-anchors the island’s culinary identity. Expect cobblestone streets, historic homes, and a slower summer rhythm that suits beach days and museum visits.

How to Get to Nantucket
Nantucket is primarily reached by air (ACK) or by ferry from Hyannis. Schedules and fares are highly seasonal - book well in advance in summer for both flights and ferries.
Nantucket Memorial Airport (ACK): Nantucket has its own airport with frequent seasonal flights from Boston Logan (BOS), New Bedford (EWB), and some New York area airports. Flight time from Boston is about 30-45 minutes; fares vary widely by carrier and season but one-way fares often start around $100-$300 depending on booking and season.
Hyannis (Barnstable Municipal, HYA) & Boston Logan (BOS): Many visitors travel to Nantucket by ferry from Hyannis; Hyannis is about 1-1.5 hours drive from Boston. If flying into Boston, you can transfer to Hyannis by bus or car for the ferry service to Nantucket.
Train: There is no rail service to Nantucket - the island is accessible by air or sea only. The nearest mainland rail options are the MBTA commuter rail to Providence or Boston, from where you transfer by road to Hyannis for ferries.
Bus / Ferry: Two main ferry operators serve Nantucket from Hyannis: Hy-Line Cruises (high-speed) and the Steamship Authority (vehicle and passenger ferries). Hy-Line’s high-speed ferries take about 1 hour 15 minutes and one-way fares commonly range from about $60-$90 for adults; Steamship Authority passenger ferries are slower (≈2-3 hours for vehicle ferries) and passenger fares for foot passengers are generally lower - check operator sites for current seasonal fares and schedules.
