Masjid al-Haram

Church Islam's holiest mosque surrounding Mecca's Kaaba

Masjid al-Haram surrounds Islam’s Kaaba in Mecca and is the destination for Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages. Millions perform tawaf (circumambulation) around the cube and pray within the mosque during the pilgrimage seasons.

Masjid al-Haram in Mecca is the largest mosque complex in the world and the site of the Kaaba, Islam’s holiest structure, located at the center of the mosque courtyard. It is the focal point for the Hajj pilgrimage and daily Muslim prayer direction.

Pilgrims perform tawaf, the circumambulation of the Kaaba, within the Mataf area and use dedicated prayer halls, courtyards and ritual facilities such as the Sa’i route between Safa and Marwa. Large-scale multi-level expansions and covered corridors have been added to manage millions of worshippers during the Hajj and Umrah seasons.

The Kaaba and the mosque precinct are central to Islamic tradition dating back to Islam’s origins; the site has been rebuilt and enlarged many times across centuries. Modern Saudi-era expansion projects in the 20th and 21st centuries have greatly increased the complex’s covered area and capacity.

Masjid al-Haram occupies central Mecca in Saudi Arabia’s Hejaz region; access to the complex is from multiple gates opening into the surrounding urban area of Mecca.

  • Access restriction: Non-Muslims are not permitted to enter the precincts of Masjid al-Haram or the city of Mecca; an entry requirement for pilgrims is observance of specific religious and administrative rules.
  • Capacity and expansions: The mosque complex has undergone repeated large-scale expansions; it can accommodate well over a million worshippers during peak pilgrimage periods following successive modern expansions.

What to See #

  • Kaaba: The Kaaba, a cubic stone structure at the centre of the mosque's courtyard, which Muslims face during prayer and around which pilgrims perform the tawaf circumambulation.
  • Mataf (circumambulation area): The Mataf area, the large open circumambulation space immediately surrounding the Kaaba, designed to accommodate large numbers of worshippers during peak times.
  • Prayer halls and expansions: The extensive covered prayer halls and multi-level expansions that surround the central courtyard and increase the mosque's capacity.

Tips for Visiting Masjid al-Haram #

  • Only Muslims are permitted to enter the city of Mecca and the Grand Mosque; if you are eligible, plan tawaf during the quieter pre-dawn or late-night hours when pedestrian density around the Kaaba is lower.
  • Avoid peak prayer times-Friday midday prayer and the evening hours during Ramadan are especially crowded-and follow official signage and workforce directions for entry and exit routes to save time.
  • Familiarize yourself with the nearest mosque gates and the layout around your hotel in advance; the Haram complex is vast and knowing the closest entry point saves long walks and helps you re-enter quickly between rituals.
