Jabal al-Nour is a rocky hill near Mecca in Saudi Arabia, named “Mountain of Light” and best known for containing the Hira Cave, a central site in Islamic history. The cave is associated with the Prophet Muhammad’s first revelation in 610 CE.

The mountain is a popular pilgrimage climb for many Muslim visitors who ascend the steep path to reach the cave near the summit; the walk is physically demanding and takes a few hours round trip depending on pace. The site is visited for its religious significance rather than as part of formal Hajj rites.

Historically the mountain has been part of the religious landscape of Mecca since early Islamic times because of the association with the revelation event. Jabal al‑Nour (the mountain of the Cave of Hira) lies a few kilometres north of the Grand Mosque area in Mecca and is reached by road from Mecca city. Visitors (Muslims only, since non‑Muslims are not permitted to enter the Mecca area) typically take a short taxi or car ride to the mountain’s base where there is informal parking, then follow the steep footpath up to the cave-expect a strenuous uphill walk of roughly 30-60 minutes depending on pace and starting point.

Tips for Visiting Jabal al-Nour

  • Remember that Jabal al-Nour and the Cave of Hira lie within the Mecca region, so visits are restricted to Muslims only; non-Muslim travelers cannot enter the area.
  • Begin the ascent very early or later in the afternoon to avoid the intense daytime heat and the busiest pilgrimage flows; the established trail from the mountain's base is steep and the round-trip commonly takes around 1.5-2 hours depending on pace.
