Masirah Island
Island Long Omani island known for sea turtle nesting
Off Oman’s east coast, Masirah Island is known for sea turtle nesting, fishing and wind-driven water sports; the island’s beaches and dive sites attract nature-oriented visitors and anglers.
Masirah Island is Oman’s largest island, lying in the Arabian Sea off the country’s east coast. The island is elongated in shape and sparsely populated relative to the Omani mainland.
Masirah is known for windswept beaches, marine life including sea turtles, and shorelines used for watersports such as windsurfing and kitesurfing. The island supports fishing communities and low-density development.
The island has long-standing local settlements and a maritime economy; modern transport links include ferry and air connections to the mainland.
Masirah is administratively part of eastern Oman and lies off the Ash Sharqiyah coast.
- Access: Ferry and small aircraft services connect the island to the Omani mainland; schedules can be limited so check in advance.
How to Get to Masirah Island #
Masirah Island lies off Oman’s east coast and is reached from the mainland either by the vehicle ferry that runs from the Ash Sharqiyah coast (the Shannah/Ras al Hadd area) or by scheduled domestic flights to Masirah Airport. On the island itself a car is useful for getting between beaches and villages; ferries and flights operate subject to timetables so check schedules in advance.
There is vehicle-rolling ferry service that links the island to the mainland and a small airport with domestic connections; access points on the mainland are reached by road from major coastal towns.
Tips for Visiting Masirah Island #
- Check ferry and flight schedules well in advance-Masirah is remote and vehicle/ferry crossings are limited, so plan logistics (fuel, accommodation) ahead of arrival.
- Visit outside the height of the mainland summer heat (shoulder seasons are more comfortable) and, if you're there in spring-summer, look into guided turtle-watching trips-Masirah is known for sea turtles, and guided excursions reduce disturbance to nesting sites.
- Services and supplies on the island are basic compared with the mainland; plan fuel and provisions accordingly and book any specialist activities (diving, kitesurfing) through established local operators.
