Markovi Kuli
Archaeological Site Ruined medieval fortress overlooking Prilep region
Markovi Kuli perches above Prilep as a medieval fortress ruin. Travelers stop for crumbling battlements, panoramas over the plain and a sense of North Macedonia’s Ottoman-Byzantine frontier history.
Markovi Kuli (Marko’s Towers) is a medieval hilltop fortress overlooking the city of Prilep in central North Macedonia. The site consists of ruined walls and tower foundations that crown a rocky ridge above the plain.
Visitors encounter remains of ramparts and stone towers on the summit and short trails that lead to multiple lookout points offering wide views over Prilep and the surrounding Pelagonia plain. The exposed ruins are compact and explored on foot.
The fortress dates to the medieval period and later acquired the name associated with the regional ruler Prince Marko (Marko Mrnjavčević); its defensive role declined after the Ottoman period and it survives now as archaeological ruins. Over the centuries the site has seen repair and reuse but much of the visible masonry is medieval or later.
Perched on a rocky ridge immediately above Prilep, the fortress is part of the hills that frame the town in central North Macedonia and is accessible by local roads and paths from the city.
How to Get to Markovi Kuli #

Tips for Visiting Markovi Kuli #
- Set aside an hour to climb from Prilep's center - Markovi Kuli is a short but steep ascent and best saved for late afternoon when the heat eases and the light is good for views over the Pelagonia plain.
- Explore beyond the main ramparts: smaller ruined walls and cisterns on the slopes are easy to overlook but give a better sense of the fortress's scale and defensive layout.
- Check with local tourist information in Prilep for the easiest access route and any recent safety or access updates; facilities on-site are minimal so plan your timing around daylight.
