Maribor Castle (Mariborski grad) is a historic fortress in the old town of Maribor, northeastern Slovenia, that now houses the Regional Museum. The building presents a mix of medieval origins and later Renaissance alterations.
Exhibits in the castle focus on local history and archaeology and include stonework and material from the surrounding region. The castle is one of the principal cultural sites in Maribor and is commonly visited alongside the city’s cathedral and riverside areas.
The castle was originally a fortified site in the Middle Ages and underwent rebuilding and refurbishment in later centuries to form the structure seen today. Its function shifted from defensive and administrative uses to cultural and museum use in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Maribor Castle stands in the city centre near the Drava River and Maribor’s main pedestrian streets, within short walking distance of the main train station and the Old Town.
