Maresha
Archaeological Site Ancient archaeological site in Israel with Hellenistic ruins
Maresha lies among rolling limestone hills south of Jerusalem, known for rock-cut tombs, caves and Hellenistic-Roman ruins. Visitors come for archaeology, guided tours of underground chambers and to connect with Israel’s layered ancient landscape.
Maresha is an archaeological site in the Judean lowlands preserved within the modern Beit Guvrin-Maresha National Park. It is notable for extensive rock-cut architecture and burial complexes from Hellenistic and Roman periods.
The site is best known for its underground features - columbaria, burial caves and long rock-cut passageways - carved out of the chalk and limestone. Surface remains include foundations and quarry cuts, and several caves are set up with paths and explanatory signage for visitors.
Maresha was occupied in antiquity from the Iron Age through the Roman and Byzantine periods and served variously as a fortified town, administrative center and necropolis during different eras. Modern archaeological excavations have revealed the town plan, its burial practices and a succession of cultural layers.
Maresha sits in the Shephelah region of southern Israel within Beit Guvrin-Maresha National Park, adjacent to the modern town of Beit Guvrin.
- Visitor access: Access is through the modern Beit Guvrin-Maresha National Park which contains marked trails and several cave entrances; lighting and walkways vary by cave so wear sturdy shoes.
What to See #
- Rock-cut caves and columbaria: A dense complex of underground installations carved into soft chalk and limestone that includes burial caves, columbaria for dovecotes, storage caverns and rock-cut passageways, all visible at surface entrances and tunnels.
- Hellenistic and Roman burial chambers: Sidonian tombs and Hellenistic burial chambers decorated with carved niches and burial benches, representing the Hellenistic and Roman-period funerary practices at the site.
- Ancient settlement remains: Surface remains of the ancient settlement including city walls, street traces and building foundations exposed by archaeological excavation that mark the layout of the ancient town.

The national park has parking at its visitor entrance and the archaeological sites are a short walk from the park facilities; there are also regional bus services that stop at or near the park from Kiryat Gat.
Tips for Visiting Maresha #
- Start at the Beit Guvrin visitor center/park entrance to pick up a map and up-to-date cave-tour information - the underground complexes are extensive and signed trails save time.
- Visit early on a weekday to avoid the Israeli weekend crowds; the Bell Caves and other underground chambers are far more peaceful first thing and provide much better photo conditions without tour groups.
- Follow the marked trails to see the full range of features: surface ruins, the Roman amphitheatre, and the extensive cave systems - many visitors concentrate on a few caves and miss the park's varied archaeological landscape.
