Marble Mountains
Mountains Cluster of limestone hills featuring caves and Buddhist shrines
The Marble Mountains rise from Da Nang’s coast with limestone caves, Buddhist pagodas and lookout steps; day-trippers combine shrine visits with nearby beaches and craft stone workshops.
The Marble Mountains are a cluster of five marble and limestone hills just south of Da Nang city, known locally as Ngũ Hành Sơn. The hills contain caves, Buddhist pagodas and panoramic viewpoints above the coastal plain.
The largest hill, Thủy Sơn, contains the main cave system and the majority of pagodas and viewing points, reached by stone steps and pedestrian paths. Temples such as Tam Thai Pagoda occupy terraces and cave mouths, while the Non Nuoc village at the base supports a long-standing stone-carving industry that supplies altars and sculptures. The site mixes short climbs, cave interiors and religious architecture in a compact area.
The hills have been a religious and craft centre for centuries and were quarried and used for stone-working in earlier times. During the 20th century the caves and hills also served as shelter and operational sites in wartime, and postwar conservation has focused on access and protecting carved cave interiors.
The Marble Mountains sit on the coastal plain south of Da Nang, immediately inland from the shoreline and adjacent to the Non Nuoc beach and resort corridor.
- Five hills: The group is composed of five named hills traditionally associated with the five elements; the largest hill contains multiple caves and pagodas accessible by steps and lifts.
- Summit and craft village: A climb to the summit of Thủy Sơn provides panoramic views over Da Nang and the coastline; the site combines religious sites and a living stone-carving tradition at its base.
What to See #
- Thuy Son (Water Mountain): Thủy Sơn, the largest of the five hills with the main network of caves, pagodas and the highest visitor viewpoint on the group.
- Tam Thai Pagoda: Tam Thai Pagoda and adjacent shrines located on the slopes with stepped walkways and carved stone features used for worship and display.
- Non Nuoc stone village: Non Nuoc stone carving village at the foot of the hills where local artisans produce and repair marble and limestone sculpture.
