Marawi Travel Guide
City City in Philippines known for its resilience
Lake Lanao’s ring of houses offers a view into Maranao life - visitors seek traditional Maranao woodcarving, brasswork and woven malongs, though the city’s ongoing rebuilding makes visits sober and carefully planned.
Why Visit Marawi? #
Lanao del Sur’s cultural heartland draws visitors to Marawi for its distinctive Maranao arts: intricate okir woodcarving, torogan ancestral houses and kulintang music performative traditions. Lake Lanao’s shoreline shapes daily life and offers scenic views, while local markets sell woven textiles and halal specialties. Travelers seeking a deeper look at Mindanao’s Muslim heritage and artisan crafts will find Marawi’s living cultural traditions compelling.
Who's Marawi For?
Marawi has distinctive Maranao cuisine-spicy local stews and rice dishes-best sampled at family-run eateries and markets. Expect authentic regional flavours, though dining options are limited and infrastructure is rebuilding.
Lake Lanao and surrounding highlands offer scenic lakeside views and fishing communities. Nature visits are possible but often require local guides and sensitivity to ongoing recovery and access restrictions in some districts.
Basic guesthouses and close contact with local communities make for a raw, low-cost stay for experienced travellers. That said, tourist infrastructure is limited and you should check local security updates before planning a trip.
Local commerce and reconstruction efforts mean opportunities for development work and meetings with community organisations. Facilities are basic; NGOs and government agencies coordinate most larger projects in the city.

How to Get to Marawi
Marawi has no major commercial airport in the city itself; most visitors arrive via Laguindingan Airport (CGY) near Cagayan de Oro and continue by road. Overland connections by bus or van from Cagayan de Oro and Iligan are the primary ways to reach Marawi.
Laguindingan Airport (CGY): Laguindingan is the main commercial airport serving northern Mindanao (Cagayan de Oro / Iligan). From the terminal you can take the airport shuttle or a metered taxi to Cagayan de Oro (Agora Terminal) - shuttle/vans typically cost around ₱150-200 and take about 45-60 minutes to Cagayan de Oro. From Cagayan de Oro catch a bus or v-hire to Marawi (see Bus below); combined airport-to-Marawi travel time by road is typically around 4-5 hours depending on connections and traffic.
Malabang Airport (MLP) / Local airfields: Marawi itself has no regular commercial airport. Malabang and other small airfields in Lanao del Sur exist but have very limited or no scheduled services; they are primarily used for general aviation, military, or occasional charters. If you arrange a charter into a nearby airstrip, expect to complete the journey to Marawi by road (times and costs vary widely and must be arranged with the operator).
Train: There is no intercity passenger rail serving Marawi or the wider Mindanao region; Mindanao has no active national passenger rail network, so rail travel is not an option for reaching the city.
Bus: Regular buses and v-hire minibuses connect Marawi with regional hubs. From Cagayan de Oro (departing from Agora Bus Terminal) buses and vans run to Marawi - typical fares are about ₱200-350 and journey time is roughly 3.5-5 hours depending on route and stops. From Iligan City there are shorter connections (fare roughly ₱100-250, travel time around 2-3 hours). Check schedules at the local bus terminals; services can vary by season and demand.
How to Get Around Marawi
Marawi is best reached and navigated by road: intercity buses and shared vans connect it to Cagayan de Oro and Iligan, while local travel relies on jeepneys, tricycles and habal-habal. For most visitors, a combination of bus or v-hire for intercity transfers and motorbike or tricycle for last-mile trips is the most practical approach.
- Bus (intercity) (₱100-₱350) - Intercity buses run to Marawi from Cagayan de Oro (Agora Bus Terminal) and Iligan among other Mindanao towns. Buses are the most reliable public option for longer distances - expect multiple stops and modest comfort. Buy tickets at the terminal for the best information about departure times and fares.
- V-hire / Minivan (₱150-₱350) - Shared vans (v-hire) operate between regional hubs and are often faster than buses because they make fewer stops. They fill and depart when full; expect a faster journey but less luggage room. Fares are comparable to buses and are a good choice if you want a quicker connection to Marawi.
- Jeepney & Tricycle (₱10-₱60) - Within the Lanao provinces, jeepneys and tricycles handle short trips and local routes into barangays around Marawi. They are very cheap and have flexible routes, but can be crowded and slow for anything but short hops. Use them to reach local terminals or nearby neighborhoods once you arrive in town.
- Motorcycle taxi (habal-habal) (₱30-₱150) - Habal-habal (motorcycle taxis) are common for short or off-road trips, especially where larger vehicles can't go. They are quick and can be negotiated per trip; helmets are not always provided. Use habal-habal for last-mile travel but agree the price before you ride and avoid them at night if possible for safety reasons.
- Taxi / Private hire / Car rental (₱500-₱2,000 (depending on distance/time)) - Metered taxis are limited in Marawi; arranging a private car or hiring a driver from Cagayan de Oro is the easiest way to travel door-to-door and useful for flexible itineraries. Rental cars and private hires are pricier but give control over timing and routing - confirm rates upfront and factor in fuel and driver allowances.
- Walking - Marawi's downtown and lakeside areas are compact enough to explore on foot for short distances; walking is the best way to see markets and the lakeshore. Be cautious after dark and keep valuables discreet; sidewalks and lighting can be limited in parts of the city.
