Maputo National Park

Maputo National Park is a protected coastal landscape south of Mozambique’s capital that combines coastal, wetland and savanna environments. It is important for regional biodiversity and conserves coastal forests, lagoons and adjacent marine areas.

Wildlife in the park includes elephants, hippos, buffalo and diverse birdlife, and the coastal waters support marine species and reef systems. The combination of beach, lagoon and inland habitats gives visitors a range of natural environments within a single protected area.

The area was established and managed to conserve the coastal corridor south of Maputo and to provide a buffer between urban development and natural habitats, with ongoing work to support wildlife management and community engagement. Conservation measures aim to balance protection with controlled tourism and sustainable use.

The park lies immediately south of the city of Maputo, extending along Mozambique’s southern coastline toward the border area with South Africa. The terrain ranges from sea level beaches to low inland plains and riverine wetlands.

• Best time to visit: Dry season months from May to October are typically the easiest time for wildlife viewing and for moving around unpaved roads in the park.
