Mannar Island is an island off the northwest coast of Sri Lanka in the Gulf of Mannar, administered from Mannar District. The island has a town of the same name and is linked to the Sri Lankan mainland by a short causeway and road.

The island’s principal landmarks include Mannar Fort and the town’s harbour facilities, alongside fishing communities that use the shallow coastal waters. The landscape includes coastal plains, sandbars and areas of scrub that support local livelihoods.

Historically the island has been influenced by successive colonial and regional powers and retains built heritage from those periods. Mannar Island lies close to the Palk Strait separating Sri Lanka from India and is a local transport and fishing hub.

  • Connection to mainland: The island lies in the Gulf of Mannar and is connected to the Sri Lankan mainland by a causeway at Mannar town, facilitating road access.
  • Local highlights: The island features coastal fishing communities and is noted for historical baobab trees and colonial-era fortifications in the main town area.

What to See #

  • Mannar Fort: Mannar Fort, located on the island, is a multi-period fortification originally built by European colonial powers and modified by later rulers.
