Mandu
Archaeological Site Fortified medieval ruined city noted for Afghan architecture
The ruined city of Mandu in Madhya Pradesh showcases Afghan‑influenced palaces, mosques and pavilions-Jahaz Mahal and Rani Roopmati among them-drawing history and architecture enthusiasts and photographers.
Mandu, also called Mandavgad, is a ruined fortified town on a rocky plateau in Dhar district, Madhya Pradesh. It is notable for an extensive ensemble of 15th and 16th century Sultanate-era palaces, mosques and pavilions.
The site includes large monuments such as palace complexes, mosques and royal tombs set among ramparts, gates and waterworks. Visitors commonly explore structures like elongated palace buildings, large congregational mosques and hilltop viewing pavilions.
Mandu was substantially developed under the Malwa Sultanate in the 15th and 16th centuries and served as a regional capital and fortified stronghold. Over subsequent centuries the town fell into decline and many of its structures survive today as monumental ruins.
The ruined town occupies a defensive plateau in western Madhya Pradesh, within Dhar district, and is approached via country roads from nearby towns and regional urban centres.
- Period of peak development: Most major monuments date to the 15th and 16th centuries and reflect the architecture of the Malwa Sultanate.
- Layout and access: Many principal sites are spread across a fortified plateau, so expect walking between dispersed ruins and viewpoints.
