Manda Hararo

Volcano Volcanic rift region with geothermal activity

A volcanic complex in Ethiopia’s Afar region. Geologists and adventurous travellers come to see recent lava fields, basalt plateaus and active volcanic terrain.

Main image

Manda Hararo is a volcanic field in the Afar Region of northeastern Ethiopia, part of the East African Rift and the Danakil Depression. It is a rift-related volcanic system notable for extensive lava fields and fissure vents.

The area is of geological interest for studies of continental rifting and basaltic fissure eruptions; it has produced recent volcanic activity in the 21st century and is monitored by volcanologists. The landscape is volcanic, largely barren and sparsely populated.

The volcanic field formed as a result of extensional tectonics along the East African Rift, producing basaltic lava flows, cones and fissure systems. Recorded eruptive episodes in recent decades have attracted scientific attention and field studies.

Manda Hararo lies in northeastern Ethiopia’s Afar Region within the broader Danakil Depression, a low-lying rift basin in the Horn of Africa.

  • Volcanic activity: Site of rift-related basaltic volcanism and documented fissure eruptions in the 21st century.
  • Access: Located within a remote, arid section of the Danakil Depression, visits are primarily of interest to geologists and organised expedition groups.
