Main image

Mamula is a small islet at the entrance to the Bay of Kotor in Montenegro, dominated by a fortified structure built in the 19th century. The fortification occupies most of the rocky islet and is the site’s defining feature.

The fortress was constructed in the 1800s for coastal defence and later saw use as a detention facility during World War II. The structure remains a conspicuous military ruin and is visible from coastal vantage points around the bay.

The islet stands close to the Montenegrin shore at the mouth of the bay and is accessed only by private boat; it forms part of the better-known maritime landscape of the Bay of Kotor.

How to Get to Mamula #

Mamula is reached only by water. Regular small-boat operators and private skippers run transfers from Herceg Novi (Javna Luka or the tourist pier) - the trip takes roughly 10-20 minutes depending on the vessel and sea state. Some boat tours include other Bay of Kotor sights; request a direct landing if the intent is to walk the fortress.

Tips for Visiting Mamula #

  • Take an afternoon boat from Herceg Novi and ask the skipper to circle the island for photos - the low angle light emphasizes the cannon embrasures.
  • Ask about the site's wartime history before disembarking; some locals still treat parts of the fortress as a war grave.
  • Avoid visiting from boats in strong wind - the channel between Lastavica (Mamula) and the mainland can be choppy and there's no official landing services.

Visit in shoulder seasons to avoid the busiest charter-boat weekends and to approach the fortress by small boat in calm seas.
