Mampsis
National Park Nabatean caravan city ruins on Negev trade routes
Ruins at Mampsis (Mamshit) mark a Nabatean caravan city in the Negev-stone houses, Byzantine churches and an interpretive centre tell the incense-route story; visitors come for archaeology and desert tracks.
Mampsis (Mamshit) is the archaeological remains of a Nabatean and later Roman caravan town in the Negev Desert of southern Israel, associated with the Incense Route. The site preserves street grids, houses and public buildings that document its role as a desert trading station.
Surviving features include domestic architecture, commercial installations and traces of defensive structures reflecting its occupation from the Nabatean period into the Roman era. Mampsis displays adaptations to desert life such as cistern systems and insulated storerooms used by caravans.
The settlement was founded and developed as part of the incense and spice trade routes linking the Arabian Peninsula to the Mediterranean, and declined as trade patterns changed in late antiquity. Excavations and conservation have exposed streets, courtyards and some building decoration.
Mampsis is located in the central Negev, on an arid plain of southern Israel, within the protected area of the national park that conserves a set of Nabatean caravan towns.
- Cultural phases: Originally established by the Nabateans, the site later saw Roman occupation and Roman-period modifications to its architecture and infrastructure.
- Trade route role: Part of the larger Incense Route network, the site functioned as a caravan stop and trade centre in the Negev desert corridors.
What to See #
- Urban remains: Street plans, houses and public buildings show the urban layout of a caravan station on the Incense Route, including insulated storerooms and domestic quarters.
- Fortified buildings: Remnants of fortified structures and public buildings attest to the site's occupation under Nabatean and later Roman rule during the first centuries BCE and CE.
