About Tel Be'er Sheva#
Tel Be’er Sheva is an archaeological mound (tel) in the Negev near the modern city of Beersheba, Israel, representing a Bronze and Iron Age urban settlement. The site is associated with the biblical city of Beersheba and demonstrates organized urban planning.
Key highlights of the tell include visible remains of fortification walls, a grid-like house plan with casemate walls, and an advanced water system, all exposed in modern excavations and presented in the archaeological park. The preserved features make the site important for understanding settlement and administration in the southern Levant.
Excavations through the 20th and 21st centuries have documented multiple occupational phases, revealing building phases, defensive works, and the water installations that supported the settlement. The research has focused on chronology and urban layout rather than later medieval or modern reuse.
The mound lies on the northern edge of the modern city of Beersheba in southern Israel, in the Negev Desert. It is accessible from Beersheba and is a short drive from the city’s central districts.
- Archaeological layers: Excavations at the site have revealed multiple occupational layers from the Bronze and Iron Ages showing planned streets and fortifications.
- Water engineering: The site’s preserved water installations and storage features provide clear evidence of ancient urban water management in a desert environment.
What to See#
- City plan and casemate wall: A preserved system of casemate walls and rectilinear houses that illustrate fortified urban planning from the Iron Age city layers.
- Water system: An extensive water system including a deep courtyard well and channels that supplied the settlement and are a focal point of the site’s archaeology.
