Mambilla Plateau
Mountain Highland plateau with tea estates and cool climate
The Mambilla Plateau in Taraba State offers cool highland grasslands, cliffs and waterfalls; visitors come for trekking, birdwatching and visits to local villages and pastoral landscapes.
The Mambilla Plateau is a highland region in Taraba State, southeastern Nigeria, forming the country’s principal montane area. It is notable for its high elevation, cool climate and upland grasslands.
The plateau includes Nigeria’s highest peak, Chappal Waddi (also known as Mount Dimlang) at roughly 2,419 metres, as well as extensive areas of pasture and sections used for tea and coffee plantations. Roads cross the plateau to towns and dispersed settlements, and the landscape supports grazing and small-scale agriculture.
The plateau has long been inhabited by the Mambilla people, whose agricultural and pastoral systems adapted to the upland environment; colonial-era administration and plantation projects introduced new crops and land-use patterns. Today the area supports local markets and limited tourism focused on scenery and cooler weather.
Geographically the Mambilla Plateau occupies a borderland region adjacent to Cameroon and forms part of the Cameroon Highlands chain; the main local town and transport hub on the plateau is Gembu.
