How to Get to Malinalco
Malinalco is best reached by road from nearby cities; the closest major airports are Mexico City's Benito Juárez (MEX) and Toluca International (TLC). Expect the final leg to be by intercity bus or taxi from Tenancingo or Toluca rather than by train.
Mexico City - Benito Juárez International (MEX): From MEX, head to the southern bus terminals (Terminal de Autobuses de Pasajeros de Oriente/Taxqueña area) by metro or taxi and catch a coach toward Tenancingo; from Tenancingo take a local taxi or colectivo for the final ~20-30 km to Malinalco. Typical total travel time is about 2-3 hours depending on traffic.
Toluca International (TLC): Toluca is the closer airport for western-southwestern State of Mexico destinations. From Toluca city you can take intercity buses toward Tenancingo or a direct taxi/transfer toward Malinalco; road travel from Toluca to Malinalco is generally around 1-1.5 hours.
Train: There is no direct national rail service to Malinalco; the nearest rail-connected towns are accessed from Mexico City. Trains are not a practical option for the last leg.
Bus: The most common approach is long-distance bus from Mexico City’s southern terminals (Terminal Taxqueña/Observatorio area) to Tenancingo; buses are frequent and then local colectivos or taxis run between Tenancingo and Malinalco (about 20-30 minutes). If you arrive via Toluca, regional buses and shared taxis connect Toluca → Tenancingo → Malinalco.
How to Get Around Malinalco #
Malinalco’s compact centro is very walkable - cobbled streets and sights cluster around the plaza and convent. Regional minibuses/collectivos and occasional buses connect to Toluca, Tenancingo and Cuernavaca; short taxi rides around town are inexpensive. Bring cash for smaller vendors and watch for steep, uneven streets around archaeological sites.
