How to Get to Maldonado, Uruguay

Maldonado (the departmental capital near Punta del Este) is reached mainly by air via Punta del Este's PDP airport or by road from Montevideo (through Carrasco Airport/Tres Cruces). There is no practical passenger rail service to the city; intercity buses and road transfers are the primary ways to arrive.

By Air

Capitán de Corbeta Carlos A. Curbelo International Airport (PDP): The small Punta del Este airport (PDP) is the closest to Maldonado and Punta del Este, about 10-15 km from the city centre (roughly 15-25 minutes by car depending on traffic). Transport options include taxis/remises (private car hire) and local airport shuttles that run to the Punta del Este bus terminal; expect a taxi/remis fare in the order of UYU 800-1,500 (seasonal; roughly US$20-35) and shuttle or local bus transfers that are much cheaper - check operators on arrival as prices and schedules vary by season.

Carrasco / Montevideo - Aeropuerto Internacional de Carrasco (MVD): Carrasco is Uruguay’s main international gateway, located near Montevideo about 120-140 km from Maldonado (travel time 2-2.5 hours by road). From the airport you can take a transfer or taxi to Montevideo’s Tres Cruces bus terminal and then an intercity bus to Maldonado/Punta del Este (see bus card). Private shared shuttles and direct transfer services operate between MVD and Punta del Este; shared shuttle fares are typically higher than the bus but lower than a private taxi - expect travel times of about 2-2.5 hours depending on stops and traffic.

By Train & Bus

Train: Uruguay currently has no regular passenger rail service to Maldonado; national passenger rail operations are limited and do not provide practical connections for visitors. For intercity travel to Maldonado, rely on buses and road transfers.

Bus: Maldonado is well connected by long‑distance bus lines. Key terminals are Terminal de Ómnibus de Maldonado (Maldonado bus terminal) and Terminal de Ómnibus de Punta del Este; main operators on the Montevideo-Punta del Este/Maldonado corridor include COT and COPSA among others. Buses run frequently from Montevideo’s Tres Cruces terminal to Punta del Este/Maldonado; typical journey time is around 2-2.5 hours and fares vary by operator and service level (regular vs. executive), so check schedules and prices in advance.

How to Get Around Maldonado, Uruguay

Maldonado is easiest to navigate by bus or car; intercity buses connect reliably with Montevideo and local taxis/remises handle shorter trips. For most visitors, a combination of walking in central areas and using buses or taxis for longer hops works best; rent a car only if you want to explore outlying beaches and rural areas.
