Northern Peninsula (Penang, Langkawi, northern Perak & Kedah)

February typically feels much like January: warm days, regular sea breezes and the odd heavy shower that clears quickly. Langkawi and Penang are popular now for beach time and island hopping, so expect higher hotel occupancy; sunscreen and a hat are essentials. If you’re planning hill walks in the Matang or Bukit Mertajam areas, early mornings are best before the midday heat and any afternoon thunderstorms.

Central Peninsula (Kuala Lumpur, Malacca, Klang Valley & west coast lowlands)

February is warm and often a little drier than the end of the year, making it a comfortable time to explore colonial Malacca and KL’s outdoor parks. Occasional thunderstorms still flare up in the afternoon, so plan outdoor activities like Batu Caves early and save indoor museum visits for hotter afternoons. Evenings remain lively; bring a small foldable umbrella for street food excursions.

Cameron Highlands & Titiwangsa Highlands (tea plantations, Genting & mountain trails)

February keeps the cooler, drier rhythm typical of the highlands with clearer skies between intermittent clouds - mornings can be crisp and pleasant for trekking. Mount Kinabalu isn’t here but Cameron’s paths benefit from this slightly drier window; early starts avoid afternoon showers that make trails slippery. Bring layers for chilly evenings and a waterproof shell for occasional rain.

East Coast Peninsula (Terengganu, Kelantan, Pahang shores - Perhentian, Redang, Tioman)

February continues the wet monsoon pattern with strong winds and frequent coastal storms; island ferries are often cancelled and undersea visibility is poor. Resorts that remain open tend to offer low‑season rates - great if you want solitude but plan indoor activities. Pack waterproof gear, flexible tickets, and be prepared for muddy conditions on any jungle trails.

Southern Peninsula (Johor, Desaru, Iskandar Puteri & Taman Negara approaches)

February is typically a pleasant month for southern beaches and city breaks in Johor Bahru - humidity remains but prolonged downpours are less common than on the east coast. Day trips into the Johor countryside and to Pulau Sibu are comfortable; restaurants and night markets stay lively. Carry sun protection for midday and a light rain jacket for occasional showers.

Sabah (Kota Kinabalu coast, Kinabalu Park, Sandakan & interior wildlife)

February continues the wetter pattern for eastern Sabah while Kota Kinabalu’s west coast can be more settled with alternating sun and rain. Sea conditions near the Sulu Sea side remain choppy, so island diving around Semporna may be patchy and subject to closures. Mountain areas are cooler and damp; pack warm layers and a reliable rain jacket for rainforest lodges and canopy walks.

Sarawak (Kuching, Miri, Bako, Mulu & the interior rainforests)

February often stays damp with frequent showers, though coastal Kuching can get clearer spells useful for visiting Bako National Park’s accessible trails. River cruises and bat cave visits are atmospheric in the rainy season but slippery boardwalks demand good footwear. Plan for scene‑changing weather and bring protective covers for cameras and gear.
