Main image

Mälaren is a large freshwater lake in east-central Sweden, immediately west of Stockholm, known for its many islands, shoreline towns and historical sites. It is one of Sweden’s largest lakes and has shaped settlement and transport patterns in the region for centuries.

Highlights along the lake include the Viking-age trading settlement of Birka on Björkö, and the Drottningholm Palace complex on Lovön, a 17th-century royal residence and UNESCO World Heritage site. The lake supports commuter ferries, leisure boating and lakeside recreation.

Mälaren formed after the last Ice Age and has long been an axis for trade and settlement; archaeological sites around its islands document Viking and medieval activity. The lake’s waterways and islands remained important through Sweden’s modern development.

Geographically it lies directly west of Stockholm, with multiple river channels connecting the lake to the Baltic Sea through Stockholm and at Södertälje.

  • Size and rank: Covers a large area west of Stockholm and is Sweden's third-largest freshwater lake, with numerous islands and shallow bays.
  • Outflow: Drains into the Baltic Sea through channels at Stockholm and Södertälje, and historically supported shipping and settlement that shaped the region.

What to See #

  • Birka (Björkö): A Viking-age trading town on an island in the lake that is an important archaeological site and part of Sweden's early medieval history.
  • Drottningholm Palace: A royal palace on an island in the lake from the 17th century that is today a UNESCO World Heritage cultural site together with its park and theatre.
  • Shore towns and archipelagos: Numerous shoreline towns and archipelagos that connect to Stockholm by ferry and commuter boats, forming a key part of the lake's human geography.

How to Get to Mälaren #

Mälaren is the large lake west of central Stockholm and is directly accessible from the city. From Stockholm Central (Stockholm C) it is a short walk to the waterfront at Riddarfjärden and other lakeside piers (about 5-15 minutes on foot). Regional commuter boats and ferries operate on Mälaren from central Stockholm piers; by car the E4/A4 motorways provide access to towns around the lake.

Tips for Visiting Mälaren #

  • Plan visits from late spring through early autumn for pleasant weather and the best boat schedules between Stockholm and lakeside towns.
  • Use Stockholm's boat piers (for example Strömkajen or Stadshus/Bürkliplatz connections) to reach islands and palaces on Mälaren-many regular ferries and excursion boats depart from central quays.
  • Explore beyond central Stockholm: western Mälaren towns such as Sigtuna and Drottningholm are easy to reach by boat and tend to be less crowded than the city's immediate lakefront.
