Selaön Island

Selaön is an island in Lake Mälaren in Södermanland County, Sweden, forming part of the lake’s archipelago. It is a populated island with villages, roads and farmland rather than a wilderness area.

The island contains residential communities, cultivated land and local services that serve both permanent residents and visitors. It is used for recreation and local tourism in the Mälaren lake district.

Historically the island has been settled for centuries and developed in line with the surrounding Mälaren region; it retains a mixture of rural and village landscapes.

Selaön sits within Lake Mälaren in central-eastern Sweden and is administratively part of Södermanland County. It is linked to the surrounding mainland by road bridges and lies among other islands and coastal settlements in the lake.

• Bridge access: Connected to the mainland by bridge near Stallarholmen, making it accessible by road and suitable for day visits from surrounding towns.

• Use the main road access at Stallarholmen (the bridge/causeway) to reach Selaön - that is the usual entry point for visitors exploring the island by car or bike.
• Visit on weekday mornings or outside peak summer weekends to enjoy quieter lakeside viewpoints and village lanes; the island becomes noticeably busier with locals and daytrippers in July-August.
• Respect private land: much of Selaön is settled countryside with private shoreline and cottages, so stick to marked public footpaths, village streets and public picnic areas when exploring.
