Makli Necropolis Archaeological Site

Makli Necropolis is a vast funerary complex on the plains near Thatta in Sindh, Pakistan, notable for its dense concentration of tombs and mausoleums from roughly the 14th to the 18th centuries. The site displays a wide range of funerary architecture, decorative carving and tilework reflecting regional dynasties.

Visitors encounter groups of elaborate monuments that vary in scale from modest graves to large royal mausoleums, many decorated with carved stone screens, calligraphy and glazed tiles. The site’s scale and variety are the principal attractions for those studying South Asian funerary architecture.

The necropolis developed as the principal burial ground for ruling elites and local notables over several centuries, reflecting the powers and artistic patronage of successive dynasties in Sindh. Many monuments show stylistic links to regional Islamic architecture and to local building traditions.

Makli lies on a coastal plain close to the historic city of Thatta in Sindh province. The necropolis is set in a flat landscape and is accessed from Thatta, which is the nearest urban centre.

Makli Necropolis is located close to Thatta in Sindh province. It lies a few kilometres outside Thatta town (commonly cited as about 6-8 km). From Karachi drive east on the N‑5/Indus Highway toward Thatta (roughly 100 km by road) and then take a local road or taxi from Thatta to the Makli site; from Thatta it is a short taxi or rickshaw ride to the necropolis.

• Plan your visit for early morning or late afternoon light both to avoid the heat and to capture the necropolis' carved stonework at its most photographic.
• Hire a local guide from Thatta to interpret the array of tomb styles and epigraphy-many of the smaller, intricately decorated tombs are overlooked without guided context.
