Makgadikgadi Pans

Lake Vast seasonal salt pans and migratory wildlife spectacles

The Makgadikgadi Pans present vast salt crusts and shimmering horizons; visitors come for guided 4x4 crossings, seasonal wildlife gatherings and stark night skies for stargazing.

Main image

The Makgadikgadi Pans are an extensive complex of salt pans and seasonal wetlands in northern Botswana, remnants of an ancient lake and one of the largest salt pan systems on Earth. The landscape alternates between hard white crust in dry months and shallow, temporary lakes after rains.

Visitors come for stark photographic landscapes, seasonal bird concentrations and wildlife movements that follow rains; the pans are also known for ancient baobab trees near Nxai Pan. Activities include guided 4x4 drives, walking and seasonal boat or canoe trips where water accumulates.

The pans have been used intermittently by pastoralists and for salt extraction historically; conservation interest focuses on their role as seasonal habitat for migratory species and specialist fauna. The terrain is remote and sparsely inhabited, with a climate that produces strong seasonal contrasts.

The Makgadikgadi complex lies in north-central Botswana; common access points are from the towns of Maun and Nata, and travel typically requires long drives on unsealed roads.

  • Seasonal transformation: The pans appear as vast, flat salt crusts in the dry season and transform into shallow, seasonal wetlands after good rains, drawing migratory wildlife and large bird flocks.
  • Access and conditions: Access is typically by 4x4 tracks from Maun and Nata; road conditions can be rough and a guided vehicle is advisable for remote areas of the pans.

What to See #

  • Sua Pan: A large peripheral pan that forms part of the Makgadikgadi system and hosts seasonal birdlife and ephemeral lakes after rains.
  • Nxai Pan area (Baines' Baobabs): A nearby pan and protected area where ancient baobab trees and open salt flats attract wildlife during the wet season and offer photographic landscapes in the dry season.

Tips for Visiting Makgadikgadi Pans #

  • Time your visit to the seasonal conditions you want: the wet season (Nov-Apr) brings migrating zebra and flamingos and dramatic flooding, while the dry season yields stark landscapes, solitude and excellent stargazing.
  • Include Kubu Island on your itinerary-its dolomite kopjes and mopane contrast dramatically with the white salt pan; sunrise or sunset here gives the best light for photos and far fewer visitors than daytime drives.
  • Travel with a 4x4 operator familiar with pan conditions and tracks; many interior roads are only passable with local experience, and operators will pick the best routes for access depending on recent rains.

Best Time to Visit Makgadikgadi Pans #

Choose the dry season for reliable access and stark desert landscapes, and the late wet season if you specifically want to see seasonal water and birds.

Dry season
May-October · ~5-30°C (wide diurnal range)
Vast open pans are dry and dramatic, great for 4x4 excursions, stargazing and seeing wildlife congregate at remaining water sources.
Wet season
November-April · ~20-35°C
Seasonal rains can transform parts of the pans into shallow wetlands that attract migratory birds (including flamingos in some years); access can be more difficult when rain is heavy.
