Maihaugen is an open-air museum located in Lillehammer, Norway, focused on vernacular buildings and regional cultural history. It comprises relocated historic structures together with indoor collections.
The collection began when Anders Sandvig started to collect and preserve traditional buildings and objects in the early 1900s; the site was subsequently developed and expanded as a public museum and cultural institution.
Maihaugen sits on the outskirts of Lillehammer town in Innlandet county and is a major cultural attraction in the area, within easy reach of the town centre and regional transport.

How to Get to Maihaugen
Maihaugen is the open-air museum in Lillehammer. From Lillehammer railway station it’s an easy walk of about 1-1.5 km (roughly 15-20 minutes) or a short local bus/taxi ride; follow local signage for Maihaugen from the town centre. By car, follow the E6 north from Oslo to Lillehammer (the drive takes around 2-2.5 hours depending on traffic) and then follow local roads/signs to the museum.
Tips for Visiting Maihaugen
- Visit in the morning on a weekday during summer when the outdoor buildings and live demonstrations are open and before coach groups arrive.
- Enter via the museum's main entrance in Lillehammer and follow the signposted route; a combined ticket covers both the indoor exhibits and the open-air collection, so plan to see both.
- Spend time in the indoor/conservation exhibits that many visitors breeze past-these rooms explain the provenance of the buildings and contain artifacts that deepen understanding of the open-air displays.
