How to Get to Rjukan#

Rjukan is best reached by road from Oslo or via regional buses from Kongsberg/Notodden; there is no direct current mainline passenger train into the town. Buses and car transfers are the typical ways to arrive and get around the valley.

By Air

Oslo Gardermoen (OSL): The main international airport for Norway; from Oslo to Rjukan expect about a 3-4 hour drive. There are organized coach services (seasonal and scheduled) from Oslo and Kongsberg that serve Rjukan, with journey times typically around 3-4 hours.

Sandefjord-Torp (TRF): An alternative low-cost airport for southern Norway; travel to Rjukan from Torp is usually by a longer combination of coach and/or car (around 3-4+ hours) depending on connections.

By Train & Bus

Train: There is no direct mainline train to Rjukan; the historic Rjukan Line (Rjukanbanen) is no longer a regular passenger rail link. Nearest mainline rail services run to Kongsberg or Notodden; from these towns you continue by bus or car.

Bus: Regular long-distance coaches and local buses link Rjukan with Kongsberg, Notodden and Oslo (operators include Vy and local carriers). Bus transfers from Kongsberg/Notodden typically take around 1-2 hours depending on origin.

How to Get Around Rjukan#

Because Rjukan lacks direct mainline rail, buses and cars are the most practical ways to reach and move around the area. For local sightseeing the town is small and very walkable, while a car or bike helps reach more remote attractions.

  • Long-distance coach - Coaches connect Rjukan with Oslo and regional hubs such as Kongsberg and Notodden. Coaches are the practical alternative to rail for this valley town - timetables vary seasonally so check operators’ sites for up-to-date services.
  • Regional bus - Local bus services link Rjukan with nearby communities and trailheads. These are essential for non-drivers and for winter sport access; services are geared toward local commuting and tourism peaks.
  • Car / Rental - Driving is the most flexible way to explore Rjukan and the surrounding Telemark region - roads are well maintained but can be narrow and wintery. Rentals are available from larger cities, and car is recommended for visiting dispersed outdoor attractions.
  • Taxi / Private transfer - Taxis and private transfers are available from nearest train stations or airports for direct door-to-door travel. This is convenient when public services are infrequent, but more expensive than buses.
  • Bicycle / e-bike - In summer, cycling and e-bike rentals are popular for valley rides and nearby roads. Distances between attractions can be significant, so e-bikes help with hills and longer routes.
  • Walking - Rjukan town and its immediate attractions (museums, waterfalls, cable car access) are easily explored on foot. Many hiking trails start close to town but require proper footwear and weather preparation.
