Mahale Mountains National Park

Mahale Mountains National Park is a protected area in Tanzania’s Kigoma Region on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika, established to conserve montane forest and its wildlife including chimpanzees. The park is noted for long-term primate research and remote, lakeside wilderness.

Visitors typically come for guided chimpanzee trekking to see habituated groups and for game and birdwatching in diverse forest habitats that rise steeply from the lake. Trails lead through montane and lowland forests with opportunities for boat trips along Lake Tanganyika and scenic views over the lake. Accommodation is limited and often remote, with travel usually involving boat transfers or small aircraft.

Scientific study and conservation attention at Mahale began in the mid-20th century with researchers establishing long-term observation of chimpanzee communities. The area was later protected to secure its unique primate populations and forest ecosystems.

The park occupies mountainous country along the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika in western Tanzania’s Kigoma Region, on the lakeside opposite parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo; Kigoma is the nearest major town and usual launch point for visits.

• Access and chimp viewing: Good wildlife viewing for chimpanzees occurs on guided treks; access to the park is commonly by boat from Kigoma or by small aircraft to remote lodges.
• Terrain and climate: The park's habitat ranges from low lakeshore forest to montane slopes with peaks rising above 2,000 metres, so weather and trail difficulty can vary rapidly.
